FDA Warnings for IVC Blood FiltersOn August 9, 2020, the FDA issued a safety warning for certain IVC blood filters. In a report titled “Removing Retrievable Inferior Vena Cava Filters: Initial Communications, the FDA cautioned that leaving IVC filters in someone's body too long could cause serious complications. The FDA offered a warning for clinicians and physicians who leave IVC filters for too long.
In the report, the FDA suggested retrieving IVC filters after the risk of a patient's blood clot has subsided. One of the main concerns of the FDA was that doctors would not remove filters designed for short-term placement before the filters become clogged or cause an increased risk of pulmonary embolism.
In 2015, the FDA warned IVC filter manufacturer C.R. Bard, Inc. of potential safety issues with the filters. In this warning, the FDA discussed the dangerous design of C.R. Bard's IVC filters. The warning letter also discussed safety violations made in C.R. Bard plants in Queensbury, NY, and Tempe, Arizona. The results stated that Bard violated the law by manufacturing and selling the Recovery Cone Removal System. Specifically, the FDA mentioned Model RC-15, G2X FIlter, and G2 Express Filter.
